Scientific Explanation Of Mantras

The Science of Mantra is based on the knowledge that sound is a form of energy having structure, power, and a definite, predictable effect on the human psyche.

Mantra: ‘Man’ means mind and ‘Tra’ means wave or vibration.

A MANTRA is a sacred utterance, sound, word, or group of words believed by some to have psychological and spiritual power. A mantra may or may not have syntactic structure or literal meaning; the spiritual value of a mantra comes when it is audible, visible, or present in thought.

In its most rudimentary form, a mantra is made of syllables which exert their influence by means of sound (vibrations). As one would have personally experienced, different syllables have different vibration patterns which affect different parts of the body. Each syllable resonates with certain organ or part of the body.Every thought or feeling that we have is on a vibratory frequency. By using mantras we can direct the mind into a higher vibratory frequency. For thousands of years, mystics and yogis have used mantras for mental and spiritual transformation

For example, by chanting “aaaaaaa”, one can feel the sensation and hence resonance of nervous system in the stomach and chest region.

Chanting “ooooo” creates sensations in throat & chest region and resonates with them.
Similarly, chanting/humming “mmmm” resonates with the nasal cavity as well as in skull/brain region.

when we concatenate (join together) the above syllables into one mantra. We get the AUM mantra which when chanted sequentially activates the stomach, spinal cord, throat, nasal and brain regions. The energy moves from the abdomen all the way up to the brain, thereby channelizing energy and activating the spinal cord and brain.

One of the most popular claims made by Yogis is that chanting Om mantra improves our concentration, gives peace and steadiness to our mind, reduces mental stress and clears all worldly thoughts.

Scientific Evidence

Dr.Masuru Emoto of Japan demonstrated that water molecules are actually affected by sound and our intention.Intention, incidentally, is our thoughts, our feelings—it is the energy behind the sounds that we create.
Dr.Emoto found that clean water looked like a snowflake—very geometric. Polluted water looks like mud. Emoto has photographs of polluted water, which at first look like mud. After a priest has chanted over this water, it is photographed again. This time, the water looks like a snowflake—the sound and intentionality has restored it to its natural pristine harmonious shape.

The work of Fabian Maman, a French acupuncturist and sound healer has taken Kirlian photographs of hemoglobin blood cells that were exposed to different sounds. In particular, he took photographs of blood cells exposed to an ascending chromatic scale—C, C#, D, etc created on a xylophone. Each note effected the cell differently, creating a different shape and different Kirlian color. This demonstrates clearly that cellular structure and energy is effected by sound.helps induce the “relaxation” response, causing reduction of heart beat, brain waves and respiration.

Few years ago, scientists conducted an experiment in which participants who had never chanted Om mantra were asked to chant it for few minutes and each of their chants were recorded. The time frequency analysis of it showed irregular waveforms which indicated unsteadiness in the mind. They were asked to chant the mantra on a regular basis and after few days, the experiment was repeated. The time-frequency analysis this time had some startling revelations. The waveforms were improved with regular spacing, had almost perfect symmetry and harmony. Not only had these participants witnessed dramatic improvements in focus, concentration & steadiness, but found themselves to be in peace, witnessed reduction in mental stress & could remain calm all the time.

Neuro-hemodynamic Correlates Of  AUM Chanting: A Pilot Funcational Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study

A sensation of vibration is experienced during audible ‘AUM’ chanting. This has the potential for vagus nerve stimulation through its auricular branches and the effects on the brain thereof.

The neurohemodynamic correlates of ‘AUM’ chanting indicate limbic deactivation. As similar observations have been recorded with vagus nerve stimulation treatment used in depression and epilepsy, the study findings argue for a potential role of this ‘AUM’ chanting in clinical practice.

Alternatively, ‘AUM’ chanting may have been a cue to relaxation. As meditation is shown to activate structures involved in relaxation response, namely cingulate cortex, dorsolateral, prefrontal and parietal cortices, hippocampus and temporal lobes, the confounding effect of relaxation could not be ruled out.

Sound can actually affect the field of energy based upon its impact on matter and subsequent impact on electrons. The video below shows how sound can affect the movement of particles and matter. It shows that sound can physically (and therefore, energetically) affect us and the electricity in our fields!Certain wavelengths of music can actually lead to neuroplasticity (the rewiring and restructuring of the brain) if listened to on a regular basis. This helps to affect our mood in a positive or a negative way. For example, binaural and solfeggio tones are known to create meditative, creative and relaxing states of mind, as well as increased control over pain
